Chapter 7

Farrell Blackmore

I settle into a steady rhythm along the trail through the trees that lead out of my property. A familiar warmth invades my thigh muscles as I run.

The early morning air is cool and crisp in my lungs, and soon the solid earth beneath my feet and the breeze against my skin lulls me into that place where my runner’s high will kick in. New muscles are aching, however. Muscles I haven’t exercised in far too long. I think back to the girl I left in my bed.

This is pure indulgence of the most dangerous kind, but I can’t help myself. I feel a smile form. I thought I would have worked her out of my system by now, but all I can think of is more. We’ve explored every inch of each other these past days, and I love it. The intimacy is something I didn’t realize I missed. Though if I’m honest with myself, I’ve never really had anything like this. The girls in my life have been too fleeting to connect with.

Aside from Abby. But she was different.

The thought of her darkens my mood. I try to brush it from my mind. It’s hard to let go of guilt when you know you’ve failed someone so profoundly. She’d been wrong for me from the start, and I knew it. I suspect she did, too. However, that didn’t stop her from trying to change me. Fix me somehow.

Some things just aren’t meant to be fixed.

The air burns a path into my lungs, trees whipping by me as I get lost in the past. Faces of men, teams, women. And Abby leading them all.

I’ve been fucked up my whole life. It’s not something that troubled me in the beginning. It simply is what it is. I was probably born stubborn and rebellious, and my father’s fists never changed any of that. If anything, they drove me deeper into the abyss. Until there were few places to receive me and the darkness that lurked within. The military seemed like a safe harbor after the increasingly violent confrontations with the man who’d raised me. I took to it like a duck to water. The rules, the structure … finding a reason for the violence. It made sense, and I thrived. Until I realized I needed balance. The need for blood had begun to disturb me.

Beneath it all, I don’t believe I’m intrinsically evil.

My chest is heaving from the exertion now. I realize I’ve pushed myself harder than I’m used to. Running from demons. It doesn’t help when the fuckers live within.

I stop briefly and put my hands on my knees, gasping for breath. My phone is strapped to my bicep, and it’s buzzing annoyingly. I look down at it and see I’ve missed several calls.

Vasiliy. Fuck it!

“Farrell, my friend!” His voice is typically jovial. “How is my girl?”

“Good,” I say. Five days of fucking like rabbits… she’s more than good.

“I’m glad to hear it. Take a look at your screen.
